T-Mobile weren't defending Gonchar's yellow. There is the possibility
that they knew by the time he started water carrying that under the code
of ethics they might have to withdraw him by the weekend. But in any
case it isn't Gonchar they hope to get to Paris in yellow, it's Kloden.
Meantime, T-Mobile have demonstrated they have the strength in depth to
ride on the front all day in the mountains, and nobody else showed that
they had the strength to challenge that.

Of course, is possible that nobody else wanted to. After all, today's
stage is tougher, and it would be a sensible strategy for every other
team to just sit in the wheels and conserve energy yesterday. So we
won't know until at least this evening which team really has strength in
depth, and T-Mo, currently down to seven riders and possibly soon down
to six, does have a problem.

But on yesterday's showing, they were the strongest team.
