Our reading of that at home as that he was being very careful to not:
a) offend people who may or may not (if they're ETA, anyway) bomb or
shoot you if they get offended, or b) offer too much publicity to
people who disrupt the race to get publicity. He started mentioning it,
thought better of it, but then realised he'd already started and had to
finish very diplomatically. There's probably rules associated with
broadcasting the tour that state you shouldn't mention it.
I (name drop alert!) spoke to them both briefly in Adelaide in January
while the missus and I got them to sign her hat (quite a collection of
Aussie riders on that hat!). They were ace; stopped to chat really
easily and naturally. We said we loved the fact we were seeing the tour
live from now on, and Phil responded instantly with "but now you have
to listen to us talking [censored] non-stop for hours!"
I have to agree with him; they know they're just talking about nothing
much, but there's often not much to talk about in a race that evolves
over hours and days. I think of them as like an older uncle who talks
[censored], sure, but is pretty lovable anyway.

My favourite Philism of the night was his comment about the upcoming
Stage 11:

"There's a lot of climbs in tomorrows stage, and we finish on the last
one."

Phil reminds me of those old comments on cricket coverage; you would
watch the coverage of one of the commercial channels, but mute the sound
and listen to ABC coverage. I would mute Phil and his mate and listen to
another commentary if I could find one.

At least this years race is interesting. Previous years' races were
plain boring and essentially choreographed pantomine + Phil = switch off.

The clanger was "the mechanic is adjusting the metal thing that moves
the chain". derrrrrr.

Personally I'd prefer silence and listen to the sound of the peloton (someone has previously mentioned this) with occasional outbursts of chatter from the team radio.

listening to team radio - that would be good. For the rugby (at the ground), we bought little radio receivers which have 2 channels - the game officials on one channel and a commentary on the other (you can listen to one in each ear). The officials channel also picks up the players near the referee or linesmen. We find the officials channel to be far more interesting than some of the commentary too.

There were a few climbs in stage 10, but they didn't finish on the last one.
Stage 11 finishes at the top of a climb, which is what I understood Phil to
say in context to stage 10, where he said it.
