Phil Wood Bottom Brackets Interchangeable?

The short answer is yes, but, you would have to buy the French threaded
cups for whatever Phil bottom bracket you chose.

I would strongly suggest, as the other poster did, that you contact
Phil Wool *before* you do anything.

As other posters have said, contact Phil Wood to make sure that you get
the correct spindle length. Phil BB are slightly adjustable side to
side. Buy a Phil Portable Installation Tool for tightening the special
Phil cups.

French BB threads are 35mm x 1mm and both cups are right hand thread.
The cups come in Anodized Aluminum Alloy and Stainless Steel.

I recommend the Stainless Steel cups because some day you may want to
remove the BB and put it in another bike. A lot of French bikes had
notoriously poor quality BB threads.

I also recommend that you try to find a bike shop with a set of Metric
BB taps to chase the threads.

The Phil cups use to come with a little tube of Loctite thread locker
compound. If not, get some and use it.

I have Phil BBs in 2 of my bikes. I've been using them since the mid
70's without any problems and switched them between a number of
different frames.

I've also had a Shimano UN72 cartridge and cups in my mountain bike
since 1994. These BBs are a lot cheaper and not the same quality as
those from Phil but I've not had a problem with the UN72 unit.

Excellent suggestions all around, but I would mention that if a Phil user
has French or Italian threads (RH threads both sides), get two of the tools,
otherwise they're very difficult to tighten down, as the cartridge and both
cups spin through the shell together.

And definitely use the Loctite. I have a Phil in my PX10 and without the
Loctite, the BB moved 2mm (2 full threads) to the right after about 200
miles of riding, despite both cups remaining tight against the cartridge. I
put on the Loctite, and it hasn't budged since.

The Phil cartridge is separate from the threaded rings, so all else
being equal, all you need are the rings, which are available from Phil.

Be aware that if you need a different spindle type or length you will
need to either buy a new cartridge or have Phil rebuild it with a new
spindle.
