This is getting a bit of chatter going on uk.rec.cycling.
My own research (okay I don't have the video camera and related software setup!) indicates that it's the cabbies that pass closest. This could be because they are allowed to drive in the bus lanes. The guy that did this study wasn't riding in London. I'd be keen to see this city's results..

clearly signal their intentions. I don't mind the closer passing
because I note cabbies deliberately, clearly signal my intention to let
them get around specifically.Busses are dodgy because of the vehicle size.
Worst are hotted up private cars including utes, distracted parents in
battle wagons, and dump trucks. (None of whom signal their intentions
clearly).yours,

I was passed very closely by a white van on Thursday and thought "That was
too close - idiot" now I have the research to back it up! -

drivers but unfortunately lack the skills.DaveB

Oh yeah... too bloody right. I claimed the left lane at the lights near
work the other day and a courier van pulled up NEXT to me with one set
of wheels each side of the white line marking the two lanes. FREAK!--

The research seems motivated by the commonly held view that overtaking type
collisions are the greatest hazard for cyclists, when I think it is turning
type collisions at intersections and failing to give way type collisions
that are most common, at least around cities. Still, it is an interesting
method of studying bike/car interactions. I wonder what the breakdown of
passing distances was, the averages arent much use. It is usually only one
in a hundred or so vehicles that seem to give you a real close shave.fb in sydnee

As for large buses.. over here we have these stupidly massive double-length "bendy buses". They are 18m+ long and a total [censored] to deal with because it takes twice as long to pass the stupid things! They bend in the middle too which can lead to interesting "sandwiching" situations if rider miscalculates..
