My new frame came with paint covered threads(couple of mothe ago) but I managed to clean all the threads enough to accept all bolts. Just removed my rear derailleur for cleaning and I am having difficulty in reinserting the bolt in the hanger, I do recall it being tight during the initial fitting but the threads wern't stripped. I think the major factor is that the bolt is very tight in the derailleur body, is this normal, I've tried freeing it with lube to no real effect. Does the bolt remove from the body of the derailleur easily, if so I could get a better purchase on it to free up the hanger threads, I noticed a circlip at the rear and assume removing this will allow the bolt to be removed, but will anything else fly off. Any thoughts or advice.

Under the circlip is the B-tension spring and it's a [censored] to get back together.

Another bolt or tool (tap?) could be used to clean out the thread.

Don't remove bolt from derailleur: not easy and there's no need. It's not unusal for bolt to be a tight fit in the hanger. Use plenty of grease, a good allen key tool, and just go for it once you're sure the bolt is not cross-threaded.

There's a good chance that it was in there with a low grade of loctite on the threads; this might make it slightly sticky coming out and going back in. If the threads on the bolt or in the hole look damaged, though, do yourself a favor; haul it to the lbs to get the problem rectified while there's still a chance of saving it without having to do anything but chase out the existing threads. You probably don't have a tap and die of the appropriate size to do this.

OK, if you remove the circlip, yes, there are things that may fly out. A spring and a special washer a the very least, maybe a bushing as well. Getting them back in can be anywhere from a no-sweat deal (I've never had a problem with it) up to "you can't get there from here", depending both on your abilities and the complexity of the design involved. If the der doesn't rotate freely on that bolt, you've already got a problem, so if you don't want to risk Clockmaker's New Apprentice Syndrome, getting the lbs to pop the bolt out and get it properly cleaned and lubed would be prudent.
