I took my barely a week old Giant SCR 2 to the LBS today because its been making weird noises (which seem to come from the wheel).

the guy in the LBS (a really big bloke!) came over, looked at it then leant it over put his foot on the pedal and flexed the frame like a credit card!!!!

what the f**k is that all about!!!!???
    why!!!! is this normal? ๐Ÿ˜•

what the hell is he doing bending my 500 pound bike like it were a toy!!

might he have damaged it or are bike frames bendy and able to take that kind of treatment. should i demand a new bike!?

im worried he may have cracked it! or something, it was just horrible! ๐Ÿ˜

oh, and they couldnt hear the nopise i went in there to sort out in the first place so not only did i get my bike mauled by a gorilla but i didnt get rid of the noise either ๐Ÿ˜

  2. Frames are built to flex some...

Unless he laid the bike on the floor and jumped on it, he probably exerted no more pressure than a strong rider would during a sprint or a hard climb...

I wouldn't sweat the tweaking in the shop, but I would wonder about the rigidity of your frame...

ok. thanks. im slightly less worried now.

common sense tells me that a bike mechanic with 10 years experience would know what he was doing, but i was alarmed at how much it bent when he did it.

i thought it was gonna snap!!

im new to road bikes, so i dont know much about their flex etc. but mines an SCR, or comfort road bike, maybe thats why it bends so much?

if its still in one piece it should be ok right? i mean could it have weakened the joints?

  4. has anyone else had an LBS bike mechanic do things to their beloved bike that they found alarming? ๐Ÿ˜•

  5. I have never had a mechanic flex my bike like that, but if one was looking for a stress related noise, I wouldn't be too surprised.

Your bike is durable. If there are no visible cracks, you should be fine.

I ride a Giant Sedona, and I am sure the frames aren't identical, but they are both Aluminium Giants. Just to ease your mind...

I bought my bike 3 years ago and have over 2,000 miles on it. a little mild off roads, and plenty of rough pavement.

I bought my bike to help me lose weight... I weighed 365 pounds when I started riding it, and still weigh a little over 300 pounds. I have during that time also had it transported across country from California to Pennsylvania with my furniture in a moving van... wrapped in a blanket, no hard case. I'm sure it was subjected to some banging around during that time. I have never crashed it, but I did put much stress on the bike due to my weight.

The bike is still fine... Total damage has been a few paint chips, one broken spoke and a flat tire.

If you do feel like the treatment of your bike was inappropriate, ask to talk to the owner and/or check with a different shop to see if they would be concerned. I am not a professional, so I can easily be wrong... but I do know that bikes are built to take some punishment.

  6. thanks!

I cant see any cracks. so ill try to chill out. i worry a lot about these kinda things! i cant stop thinkin he might have damaged it but i gotta relax!!!
