Well you certainly seemed to generate some fairly strong responses!
That said, from what I can see on the web site and from the almost
complete lack of coverage on local radio, i.e. no "those bloody
cyclists are revolting!" nonsense (that I've heard), it does look like
a bit more of a mass social ride rather than other more politicised
Critical Mass rides that I've experienced and heard about elsewhere.

I had thought about joining a CM ride back in Edinburgh a number of
years ago, but it did seem to be dominated by a mob mentality, "let's
run red lights en masse" and "sod you car drivers, we're taking over"
type [censored]. That's probably what the others are rightly complaining
about as it does cyclists no favours. Maybe the Perth lot are just too
laid back for that sort of nonsense?

Yep, if you look at the site, it starts at 5:30am and runs for 30 to 50
minutes. Obviously designed to maximise inconvenience to the Perth peak
hour traffic at 5:30am! If think the OP is just full of bile and didn't
even read the link and the aims of this ride.

This has always been a brilliant advertising ploy - tell people they can't/shalt/shouldn't & hey presto! A spontaneous advertising campaign. I suppose Lotte's despised me since 1997, even before she knew or cared. 😄

It really is not necessary for you to explain to me what the word means. And yes, that is precisely how I feel.

The only times I have encountered Critical Mass have been by bike... on my way home from work. And it was really [censored] annoying and it annoyed the [censored] out of me to be held up by it (I don't exactly have infinite lights on my bike). There are far better ways to advocate cycling than acting like [censored] in peak hour on a Friday afternoon. Hey, the people you're trying to demonstrate your cause to are probably burning more fuel than they otherwise would be.

It seems that a lot of the people carping at Critical Mass should have gone
along to see this when it was on:

Rather than speaking from total ignorance if you've never been on a CM (that
is ridden with it, not just looked in at the start or watched it pass from
the pub window), this film gives an excellent picture of the deeper
attitudes behind the ride, how riders interact positively with drivers, some
of the problems the ride has had to deal with, and the wide range of
cyclists, not all ferals and neanderthals, who take part in CM rides.

Criticise Critical Mass all you like, but at least criticise it from a
position of knowledge.
