I understand that Mr. Laurie Taylor repeated an old joke today, which goes:

Q What do you call a cyclist who doesn't wear a helmet? Answer Organ donor.

Aside from being in bad taste, Mr. Taylor should have been aware that

a) cycling is not dangerous - estimates of death (from all causes, not just
head injuries) while cycling are around one per 450 years of cycling 24
hours a day, non-stop;

b) the efficacy of cycle helmets' prevention of serious head injury is
essentially zero; and

c) helmet compulsion has the principle effect of reducing the numbers of
cyclists, with a concommitant rise in injury rates.

Perhaps Mr Taylor should do a little homework before Thinking Onair.

It's more usually heard about motorcyclists, where it is much closer to
truth.

Stephen Fry told a similar joke on a Quite Interesting installment recently
(?), but about a relative who saw him removing his motorcycle helmet, so I
wouldn't be surprised if it's morphed at the BBC.
