Following my post the other week about my rims nearly being worn through and worrying whether they were about to fail catastrophically, I have been looking in two LBS's and online for a new wheel but without a great deal of success. It seems that my Specialized Sirrus (hybrid) bike's combination of a 700C rim and a (Mountain bike?) hub with a 135mm rear axle is rather unusual. I don't really want to spend bags of cash on a custom / hand built wheel, but it is looking like I may need to go down that route as none of the off the shelf wheels appear to come in that configuration. My LBS advised against fitting a 130mm axle road wheel and squashing the aluminium frame. Has anybody else had this problem? Are there any cheap-ish off the shelf wheel solutions (i.e. in the, say, £80 - £100 bracket) that I have missed? My current hub is just a cheap no-name one that came on the bike, so probably not worth rebuilding it into a new wheel to save money. I am quite surprised that with the large numbers of hybrids being sold nowadays that there aren't more off the shelf wheels available!

I didn't have a wheel fail (as such), but I did wear through the rim wall (brakes) and come VERY close to having a brake block fully "lock" by jamming in the break.
Fortunately I was warned by by a strange "ticking" noise when braking. The "ticking" was the block going past the break.

And you'd get a more reliable freehub if you get a major brand like Shimano. The /model/ doesn't have to be high-end one; Deore would be fine. You could get a decent handbuilt wheel built for your budget, no need for bags of cash. Find a bike shop that would be willing and able to build one for you, or find a suitable builder online, or build yourself (previous experience not essential!).
www.merlincycles.co.uk specialise in 26" wheels but perhaps they would do you a 700C if asked (you could even send them a rim... why not?!). St John Cycles is another option.

The cheapest solution, as I think I mentioned last time, is simply to fit the new rim of your choice onto your existing hub and spokes. If you don't think this is worth doing you can buy ready made wheels with road rims on MTB hubs if you look around. For example, have a look at <http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category-700c-(622)-Audax-fast-touring-rear-690..htm>. Three of the four shown are in your price bracket and they will all be excellent wheels.
Alternatively, choose the ready-made road wheel you like and adapt it by fitting a longer axle and using spacer washers between the cones and the locknuts. Ideally you would add the spacers to the left side only and re-dish the wheel to bring the rim back into the centre. This will actually give you a stronger wheel as it will have less dish and more equal spoke tension with 135mm OLN than with its original 130mm OLN. If you buy the wheel from a decent LBS they should be able to do this for you at a fairly modest cost.

Custom wheels don't cost bags of cash - you'll be pleasantly surprised how cheap they can be.

Yup. Don't do that, it's potentially very bad news.

I'd be tempted to simply space a standard road wheel so it lines up centrally. If it doesn't work then it might be worth asking what the lbs would recommend and what they'd charge for a custom wheel-build. IME it's probably less than you'd imagine ... 😉
