john, seriously... just buy the gear that feels comfortable for you... both apparel-wise and wallet-wise.

I am sure that Nike shoes are made in various places around the world ...

I've had two pair of Nike shoes ... one soccer & one road. In the end, I decided that I didn't like EITHER ... not necessarily the fault of the shoes ... for non-cycling I have reverted to Adidas (after trying several other brands) and Shimano for cycling.

Don't worry about what other people are wearing -- if you find a pair that fits (and, has the features you want) & is in your price range, then buy them.

i think that finding the right fit more appropriate

i won't use or buy nike for several reasons, but none of those have anything to do with some "buy italian" concept...
nike are all show no go. chances are that if any professional sportsman wasn't paid large amounts of money by nike they wouldn't use them. the quality is rubbish just like their products and where and how they're made.
what do you expect from 8year olds getting paid 2c a day...
