children cyling to school each day.
On Tuesday there were 54 bikes in the bike sheds.
On Thursday two bikes were stolen.
Today there were 44 bikes in the bike sheds.
A drop of 2 bikes can be accounted for by their theft. Is the further
drop of 8 down to fear of theft?
I would hope so, if the school can't protect the bikes, I would hope
you don't expect children to take them to school - what does the CCTV
of the bike shed show?
The bike sheds are opened at 8.45 for 9am, locked at 9.10, and after
that have internal access only through the main gate. They are
unlocked again at 3.10 for 3.20, and locked at 3.45. The
headteacher's office overlooks the Year 5 and 6 bike shed. The Year 1
- 4 bike shed is quite secluded. Neither shed has CCTV.
Soon after 3.10 on Thursday a teenager, maybe 15 years old, was seen
by a parent walking into the Year 5 & 6 bike shed, pick up an unlocked
BMX type bike with stunt pegs, and walk away with it. We are not sure
about the theft of the other bike from the Year 1 - 4 bike shed, but
it was also unlocked.
As an immediate measure I went to Makro and bought 12 bike locks for
loan to children who don't have their own lock. The locks are of poor
quality but should prevent an opportunist.
I found 15 unlocked bikes in the sheds today and locked them all up -
it was mayhem at 3.20 trying to unlock 15 bikes at once.
