  1. Anyone using kneesavers on their recumbent and, if so, what problems did they solve for you?

FS in Angier, NC 2002 Vivo

  2. I have tried knee savers, but found that they gave me too much Q-factor. My right foot points out
more than my left. A better solution was to order two different spindle sizes from Speedplay, a
longer one for my right foot and a shorter one for my left. If you do not use Frogs this would not
    be an alternative, though.

  3. Some people benefit from a wide Q factor...However, Just what is a normal Q factor? My wife has two
fake knees and one fake hip. She used kneesavers because we tried them and it did away with some
ankle pain she was experiencing. She had em' on her EZ-1 and now uses them on her trike and will I'm
sure insist on them on our soon new tandem. It is hard to tell what will help you until you try it.
I kee a pair of loaner kneesavers on hand at the shop.

  6. They were they only thing that I tried that made my knee pain go away.

I use them with speedplay frogs.

They also make clicking out easier.

Yes, I am since my feet relaxed are more diagonal. I do not know about anyone else but my hip
joints are a little more than 3" apart, making leg rotation so much comfier! I always wear cowboy
boots, andKneesavers keep me from hitting the cranks with those big heels. I like them, but not for
    saving my knees!

  9. I like them because they allow my ankles & heels to clear the Schlumpf Mountain Drive button that
sticks out of my bottom bracket. With or without them I still have knee pain but then I have pretty
    bad knees. YMMV.

  10. Floyd,

I sometimes have knee pain (osteoarthritus = aging) and slightly splayed feet. I thought kneesavers
would be the answer. But, for whatever reason after trying many adjustments, I just could not get
comfortable with them and took them off. Still, it was a fairly cheap experiment.

  11. Jude I don't think this is what you are asking but I did do a spreadsheet one wintery morning. I
measured the Qfactor of all of my handy bikes both from the outside of the crank arms and from the
    centers of the pedals.

I really don't like the feel of wide crank arms and was trying to analyze what I had on each of my
bikes. I really don't like the name "knee saver" finding it a somewhat reverse name in my opinion.
But more power to your wife considering that most folks with "normal" legs won't pedal anything.

anyway here is a link to my data. doctorvision.comqfactoranalysis.xls dave

  12. My right foot angles outward. I use the kneesavers with Speedplay frogs (actually a cheaper knockoff
from the Hostel Shoppe), on all my recumbents. It allows me to angle me right foot (if necessary)
and not hit the cranks. I also angle the cleat on the shoe as much as possible to try to make the
    entry/exit easier.

  13. How do you know if you need Kneesavers? I sometimes get knee pain on my short rides (mile or so) and
yet when I stop and am off the bike I feel just fine, with no trouble walking. True, I *am* horribly
out of shape so I don't know if it's me and it'll improve with more riding or not...

Kneesavers seem to help for two types of conditions. The first is when your hips are such that you
are really more comfortable with a wider Q factor, which is the distance between the pedals
determined by the bottom bracket. Here the Kneesavers just move your feet outboard. The other
condition is a toe out-heel in type of stance that many people's feet naturally seem to fall into.
Here the more outboard position allows you to rotate your feet outward without hitting the crank.

I don't know how to determine whether you need a greater Q factor, but the second condition is
fairly easy to spot. Just put platform pedals on your bike, and go for a ride. During the ride make
note of the position that your feet naturally gravitate towards. In my case it is always a toe out
position, so Kneesavers made a lot of sense.
