As I was walking into work this AM, I noticed only one bike on the bike rack out front. It was a sad site. It was TOTALLY stripped. The saddle and seat post were gone, the handle bars, fork, rear wheel, even the skewers were missing. About that time the security guy came out to take pictures. I gave him my card and told him to give it to the lady to whom the bike belonged to. She left me a voice mail over lunch and I just got off the phone with her. I've got an old "beater" bike that I had set up that I don't ride too often. I'm gonna let her canablize it for parts. I should be able to get her everything but stem and rear cassette (but she can get those through nashbar for cheap). It's not that big a deal, I was gonna donate the bike to the salt lake bicycle collective anyway but, if she's gonna expend the effort to commute by bike, I'm gonna do what I can to keep her on the road.
I'm heading over to the post office at lunch and sending out a couple of boxes of cycling gear and parts to some troops who use bikes all the time to get around their base in Al Asad Iraq.

You know, I could have kept that bike in my basement, gathering dust. I could have sold it for a limited amount of cash. I could have started riding it more, but I've got 2 other bike that would fit the bill.
My real plan, as I said, was to donate it to the bicycle collective, which is a non-profit group that helps less fortunate folks with repairing their bike and training folks in bicycle repair, with the aim of getting them jobs in the future. That's what I'm going to do with the frame, my wife's "old" bike and any left over parts. That's a much better option than any of the others.
I do want to keep the 9 spd rear cassette for use on my MTB. It's a 12x26 and would be good for flat rides.
No bike parts, but I helped some people yesterday that had car problems. Their transmission was leaking fluid so I directed them to a mechanic and put 2 quarts of fluid in the transmission,just to be safe since it was very low. The lady tried to give me $20 but I refused. I have actually given a bike away before a couple of years back. I hope the garage didn't rape those people on repairs.
Well, here's one story of how it comes back to you.
About a year ago, I was coming out of the bike shop that I frequent. As I was getting on my bike, a man and his young son come over to me. The man asked me if I could spare him some change because his car had broken down on the trip from California to Kansas and he had spent all his money getting the car fixed. He then told me how the car woiuldn't be ready for a couple days and he and his kid needed a place to stay and something to eat. I looked at the guy and he didn't seem to be "bumming" cash, really looked like he could use some help. So, I pulled out my wallet. I carry an "emergency" $50 in my wallet, so I gave it to him so he and his son could get a room and some food. I really didn't think much about it after I gave it to him. I figured that what he did with the money was between him, his son, and God. As I left, he took one of my business cards as well. About two months after that happened, I got an envelope from Kansas out of the blue. In the envelope was a thank you letter along with a crisp $50 bill.
What you did for that lady is really cool, Lonnie. In some way, it will come back to you! To her, you could be her angel. Good job!
Interesting, I'm a believer in Karma myself and I think if you do good, then you will receive good...
HOWEVER, I have recently been wronged by somebody and would like to get my revenge (someone grassed me up for stuff I didn't do and I got in trouble with my landlord, now I want to drain the oil out of their car).
Seeing as how Karma will inevitably get her anyway, is it bad that I should be the person to dish it out?

Oh yeah it is always funny to see a bike like this. The state they are in tends to make you look more just to see what is off of it. Your mind gravitates towards asking yourself, "Is it still ridable? You don't need a seat. Right." Lol Sometimes these kinds of bikes when you give a little TLC they clean up really nice and ride great.
What you did is pretty great, good to know that people like you are still out there. I hope that if I ever end up in a situation like that lady, someone will at least give me a hand.
