  1. As we all know it, intense exercise releases natural opiates (or
    something like that?), giving you a little pick-me-up. I wanna get the
    most of this free and safe dope, so I need to know: for how long after
    exercise do you get this high? Do you get more of it by aerobic or
    anaerobic exercise? My gut feeling is, you get a more intense high from
    anaerobic exercise (like swimming), but it doesn't last as long as the
    one from aerobic exercise.

  2. What a great thread! We get to talk about how to get high. I wasted
    the Woodstock era on nerdy pursuits, so I didn't do drugs (except for
    the one manufactured by yeast).

    As in the case of everything else, I'm a self-styled expert on the fine
    art of getting a buzz through exercise.

    I do have a possibly original observation to bring to the table.

    I think that the endorphin buzz is related to how long one can maintain
    near maximal exercise intensity, and the way to maintain high levels of
    exercise intensity is to cross train in the same exercise session.

    There are obviously unlimited ways of doing this, but let me just give
    an example of something which would be generally available to most
    people.

    Let's say that you've got 45 minutes and a gym with a good assortment
    of cardio equipment.

    Do you:

    1. Pedal the stationary bike, maintaining a power output of 180 watts
    for 45 minutes?

    2. Run on a treadmill, maintaining 8.5 miles per hour (0.62 miles per
    kilometer for non-Americans) for 45 minutes?

    3. Row on a Concept II ergometer, maintaining a power output of 160
    watts for 45 minutes?

    OR:

    Ride the bike at 210 watts for 15 minutes, followed by running at 9.5
    MPH for 15 min, followed by erging at 180 watts for 15 min?

    Now, the exact numbers aren't important, but you get my drift.

    By single session cross training, you can maintain higher exercise
    intensity per time and therefore higher overall intensity than with
    single exercise training.

    The result is a notably bigger buzz.

    I agree with Martin that the buzz is more a feeling of extreme
    mellowness. I like to do a little poly-pharmacy, by adding black
    coffee caffeine to my endorphins.

    Great way to start the day.

  3. The only bit I have to add to this is the length of the effect.

    I certainly feel a little 'mashed' all day after a serious swimming session
    (2miles or so).

    Not quite the same as the 'mashed' I had when I was younger via various
    means, but on reflection its actually probably a lot nicer, safer and
    cheaper ;-)

    Whenever I play with breath holding whether it is swimming under water
    for laps or practicing breath holding during cardio exercise is the best
    way to catch a buzz. Hyperoxygenation coupled with endorphins is a nice
    buzz.

    Man!

    I've been exercising forever. Swimming, running, biking, triathlons,
    etc. While i enjoy it a lot, I never get high. I wish I did. The harder
    I go, the more it hurts.
