That keystroke applies to Microsoft Outlook Express, which is the
newsreader you are using. It may differ if you decide to use another
newsreader.

If there are caps in my user name, it's been like that for years-from the
time I set up my OE account. Why is it so offensive to a few folk on this
site. I know, steroids make the users of those chemicals, sensitive and
gives them a false sense of supremecy. Is that what I hear on this non

That would explain why it was that I got an email from you once. I
don't normally use Outlook Express, but it would appear that you need
to type 'Control' plus 'g' for "Reply to Group." I hope that's
helpful.

I imagine that the way that we quote messages plays Hell with screen
readers. Basically how it works is this. When replying to a message
we leave enough of the context of the message so that someone who
isn't following along closely can see what was said before. The
previous message is quoted by putting a greater than (or sometimes
some other symbol) at the beginning of each line. So the message I am
responding to has one greater than sign at the start of each line:

Where it gets tricky are "threads" where quite a few people have
participated. Because with each new message another layer of greater
than symbols is added. So you get something like this:

This is the stuff that I am adding.

To those of us that can see this sort of quoting gives all sorts of
visual cues as to who said what. Depending on what sort of software
you use to read news the various levels of quoting can be colored
differently etc. For someone relying on a screen reader it probably
comes out as jibberish.

It makes me wonder if there is a smarter newsreader that could
interpret the levels of indention for you. This is the sort of thing
that has to have come up before.

I'm glad, you explained it as you did, Jason. I could go into the JAWS
dictionary and have the screen reader pronounce the > sign as a silent word,
thus eliminating all those annoying Greater Thans. I'll have to experiment
with using bits and pieces of previous shares, before inserting mine.
