OT: RIP Fuzzymutt...

They're the best. Some breeds seem to produce a large percentage of life
long puppies...Boxers, for one.

I will eventually. I still have two other dogs to love for the time
being. I am very fond of collie and shepherd breeds but that little
corgie that I temporarily adopted earlier this year really stole my
heart. I hated to give her up, but my sister and brother in law really
do adore her.

When I'm ready, there are literally dozens of corgies and corgie cross
adults on petfinders.com. I'd like to get a sable and white male or
female between 6 months and 3 years of age.

That's a given. I prefer to adopt adults as I know that as busy as I am
I really don't have time for a puppy. Cute and fun but very needy. The
last few dogs I've adopted, including Fuzzymutt, were at least 6 months
of age or older. Longer attention spans and can usually be housetrained
within only 2 or 3 days if they are not already.

Plus, since most people prefer pups, odds are you really are saving a
life by adopting an adult. Jewels, my border collie, came from the local
shelter and was 8 months old. She's been a real joy and was a cinch to
do basic training with.

I am sorry to hear about this man. I currently have 8 cats, 2 boxers and a
Macaw. I think the only animal I will ever own that I don't have to worry
about dying before me is my macaw. I have lost many animals and it is always
a heart wrenching experience. You can rest well knowing you gave him a great
life. I volunteer with a local animal rescue organization. I would suggest
doing something similar as it brings great rewards to both the animals, you
and the people whom you place the animals with.

I agree with John. Don't forget about all the adult dogs that need homes. Both of
my boxers were rescues and adults when we got them and there is no difference
between them and dogs that I have had from puppies. It is the same with cats.

I hear ya about the parrot thing. ;-)
Another long lived animal is a tortoise, but they are not quite the pet
that the other three are.

My cockatoo is very affectionate and demanding, but that's ok.

And yes, each pet that dies takes a little piece of our hearts with
it....

I wish they'd do that for mammograms. I've got one of those coming up.
