Your post looks fine. When you see problems, where are you viewing the
posts? In other words, which software do you use to read newsgroup messages?

I just go to groups.google.com. Maybe I have a setting wrong or
something? At any rate, nice to know you're not seeing the mess I'm

bothers you that much, and you have the choice and the technical
skills, you can get a newsreader which will behave better. Remember,
only a few of us in NG's use Google, it's rather basic. But it works
fine if you're not too sensitive about how your posts appear.

And remember that there are a fair percentage of participants in these
NGs who like to humliate beginners and throw out lines like "Try
switching to real News software and an NNTP feed." knowing you probably
have no idea what that means, but it makes them feel better about
themselves. If you let these lower life-forms bother you, the NGs will
be hell!

I'm not talking down to him, as you hopefully noticed. I asked about his ISP
and operating system. Assuming he's not using a public computer, this
information may allow me to assist him in viewing the newsgroups more
pleasantly. And, if you're wondering why I asked about his ISP, it's because
I might be able to point him to his equivalent of the info below, which came
from my ISP's tech page:

What is the news server address?

Whether your email address ends with @frontiernet.net, @citlink.net, or
@newnorth.net the address of the news server is:

news.frontiernet.net

Tech Note #1: News server authentication is only required you are connected
through one of our 'roaming access' dial up numbers, or when you are not
connected to the Internet via a FrontierNet connection. Roaming access dial
up numbers are denoted with a '*', and can be found here. Though it is not
mandatory, you are welcome to use news authentication at any time when
connected to the Internet via the FrontierNet network.

Tech Note #2: If, as a Citlink or Newnorth user, you still have
'news.citlink.net' or 'news.newnorth.net' entered for the address of the
news server, either will continue to function properly. It is not mandatory
that you change the name of your news server to 'news.frontiernet.net'.

I use Google groups too, so I know what you're saying. Your posts just
*look* screwed up when you read them. They're not. While you're
reading one of your posts, resize the window. You'll notice the
carriage returns change. It's a (ridiculous) Google display feature
rather than something added to your post.

Forget google groups for anything other than looking up archived
posts. His advice was right on.

Look again, Joe. I replied to you because you were the last message,
but I wasn't being critical of your obviously helpful questions. You
were going in the wrong direction, but trying to help. You probably
just never used Google Newsreader and didn't know that it does this. I
just knew his problem had nothing to do with his OS or system, but has
to do with Google Newsreader. My criticism was toward the moron who
gave a very unhelpful disparaging comment. No questions trying to find
out what might be wrong, and no instructions on how to fix it. Just a
put-down. Typical of his type.

out there who try to make us non-computer professionals feel miserable.

much my definition for "[censored]," and there's plenty of them around.

Some of us don't run to the Apple store when the new iPods come out.
We have lives that don't revolve around computers. It's nice to know
we're not alone, then, when somebody acknowledges one of these lower
life-forms spouting technospeak designed to make them feel smart.

He may have said it in a somewhat brief manner, which I then tried
to expand on.

The only advice you're given so far is to keep using google
groups. That speaks for itself.

I did. I warned him about people like the other poster and you. Morons
who think they have all the answers for everyone else, can't think
beyond their own situation. Everyone should do what you're doing

Isn't that funny? I didn't 'hear' any of the 'attitude' or talking down
in Ed's post that you did. Scooter asked, Ed answered. He didn't
elaborate on his Google Groups mention, but it answers "what the heck am
I doing wrong?"

His recommendation to using News software seems pretty forthright to me
-- and it also answers the question. He was brief and to the point.
Admirable, I think. And if you type <define: NNTP> (without the
brackets) into a Google search window you get information about NNTP.

Actually, he needs help, but there's more than one type. He could do what
someone said and just enlarge the window. Or, he might already have a
newsreader and not be aware of it. This is why I asked about his OS. If it's
Windows, he should have Outlook Express.

whiny "anything except what you're using now"? Is Google Groups truly

It's worked for me for probably ten years. It's free, doesn't require
installing, updates pretty much instantaneously. Am I so stupid I
missed all its flaws?
