Question about GPS

There's only one ( I think) that you can actually download a "map" into, ,that's the TOL Garmin that
has 24 mb's of memory. Most GPS will store GPS marking points ( waypoints) and route information,
which is different. We use a GPS like that ( Garmin Etrex Summit) in combination with paper maps. I
can tweak the maps with my computer software and mark the way points and routes on the maps. One of
the reasons that I didn't buy the model that stores maps is that no one in their right mind would
want to keep a map in something with batteries... ;-) You always should carry a paper one if you are
going to take one at all.

Gman uses one too. The Garmin website IIRC has a really good comparison chart of the
different models.

Borrow one first if you can. I was very keen to get one until I did. A friend that's in Iraq lent
me his and after the initial 6 day GPS frenzy it's been sitting in next to the couch for about 4
months now.

I have a Garmin Legend and I can get just about 1 state of maps loaded into
it. Really cool little tool. You can set waypoints and program routes as well. Expensive though.
It's $299 for the unit plus another $100 for the mapping software.

I havea Magellan Meridian Gold that can store very detailed maps. It generates decent enough
printable maps. The mapping software also can generate pretty detailed elevation data.

We used the Etrex Legends over there. They did program detailed maps to all of our rally point and
fuel points. So im sure you can add maps. Its also pretty compact, Durable. The glass however did
get scratched from the sand. I have had a problem however under bad weather in the canopy of tree I
sometimes loose my signal. Which can be a real problem. Maybe some of the other ones have better
antennas or something.

Buy a compasss and maps. It's less expensive and the batteries never run out.
