  1. This is the other hand-written recipe that fell out of the 1951 Betty
Crocker cookbook I got on eBay. I'm doing my best to read and interpret
    this handwriting, folks 🙂

    Date Refrigerated Pinwheels

4 cups sifted all purpose flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. baking soda

Cook together then add nuts (cool)
2-1/4 cups cut up pitted dates
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1 cup water
    1 cup chopped nuts

    1 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar (firmly packed)
    3 eggs, well beaten

Sift first three ingredients together. Combine dates and next 2 ingredients
in saucepan; cook over low heat until thick, about 10 min. Add nuts. Cool.

Meanwhile, mix shortening with a spoon until fluffy and creamy. Add brown
sugar slowing while continuing to work until light. Add eggs; mix well.
Add flour mixture; mix well. Cover; chill thoroughly. Divide mixture in
half. Roll each half separately into a rectangle a little less than 1/4"
thick. Spread each with date filling. Roll up as for jelly roll into 2
rolls. Wrap in waxed paper. Chill well, overnight if you can in
refrigerator. Then cut with a sharp knife into slices about 1/4" thick.
Arrange 2" apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 400F for 10-12 min or
until done. Makes about 5 doz.

    Jill
