That is certainly the lightest option of all. Unfortunely, I don't use
self-inflating mats; I use a lilo-type infalatable bed which packs
down very much smaller and mitigates lumps in the ground better than
thermarests IMO. I'm really looking for a chair, complete. The
lightest I have so far found is 2kg, but am hoping to find something
about half that weight. I don't think that's a design impossibility,
yet am having no luck so far, from UK suppliers at least.

I should mention that seat can be a low to the ground. However it
needs to be off the ground to some extent. Arms are not essential. A
backrest is, though.

I tried something like this at the outdoors show a couple of years ago and
it was surprisingly comfy. Meets your weight limit, but doesn't come with
any legs so does generally go on the ground, but could be used on a rock or
bench, or so the blurb says.

various canvas folding chairs, from prices as low as £4. Includes a tripod
stool (no backrest), a simple chair (possible best price/performance?) and
more complicated looking chairs.

Perhaps worth a look ?

Hi Nigel, Yes; it was well worth a look; thanks. Nothing that quite
met my weight requirements, but I bought a pair of waterproof gaiters
there, so the trip was worthwhile. (I got drenched trousers yesterday
from wading througth wet bracken. Won't have to do that again!)

T-rest chair is a lot lighter than that and will take a self-inflating
cushion as a seat - but the OP has already dismissed that idea because
he wants his chair to have legs.

Hi Colin, Thanks for the lead. I was not aware of those Fox brand
chairs. They look attractive; unfortunately all seem to be about
double the weight I need for my back-packing trips.

Certainly, although the weight of my TaR chair and Ultralite 3/4 is 930g and
the roll-up chair 985g, so not much in it. I suspect anything less robust
than this would be seriously lacking in comfort. My TaR chair is 312g and I
consider it a luxury item, but one that's worth carrying. The Ultralite I'm
already carrying as a sleeping mat, of course, and I certainly wouldn't
carry a dedicated chair AND a sleeping mat.

Slightly worrying that I now have a spreadsheet with all the weights of my
current gear and a few desirable items, so I can dream about how much a
could lighten my load (and wallet!).

Thanks for the suggestion. I used to have a couple of them.
Interesting option, except that, in my case, I often need to sit on
thorny ground with thistles etc. They took an awful long time to
inflate too....

Thanks, Colin, but I am certain that that is an error; I'm fairly
familiar with that type of chair and 5kg *per chair* (not per pair) is
typical - especially when they have a "heavy duty steel frame" as that
particular model is, according to the spec. If it had said
"Ultra-light aluminium frame", 2.5kg per chair might have been just
about believable - but even then, not quite.
