  1. Has anyone seen the free 'Britain's 50 best Walks' in the Guardian last
    Saturday?

    I had a quick look at some of the ones near where I live and the writer
    - a Zoe Wiliams - goes on about 'Mount Snowdon', Caernarvon (should be
    Caernarfon) and Caernarfonshire (should be Gwynedd). Makes me suspect
    she has never been to Wales!

    It's fine. It'll keep the grockles around the honey pots ;-)

    Seemed a fairly predictable set of walks - however one can never have
    too many books on walks.

    grockle and emmit are devon and cornwall terms for tourists.

    <mode = call my bluff>
    Issa stereotypical tourist m'lud. The sort 'oo leaves gates open and
    buys kitchy little wotnots with 'present from ...' writted on them.
    Actually I know (thankfully) very few people like that, but that's what
    they are. A grockle is a tourist.
    <mode = off>

    And that the writers have never used a bus! Several walks which I know
    have good public transport access have comments like "train (sic)
    station 10 miles" as the total public transport info. E.g. one from
    Lockton, N. Yorks, says exactly that, when in summer the nearest staion
    is Levisham (3 miles) and a bus to Leeds, York & Whitby serves the
    village all year.

    I would advise caution if reading a book on a walk, especially in steep
    places. They are useful for stuffing your sack with for backpack
    training though.

    Hamish Brown famously reads as he walks - he admits to the occasional
    crash into gates across the track.

    I always carry a book wherever I am.
