  1. It was a hot and steamy morning....but I won't go into that....

Seriously, the race started at 7am at Reid Park in Tucson, AZ. It
was about 78F at the start and annoyingly humid. Could have been
because we were in a heavily-irrigated city park. Claude and I
ran slowly around the park for about 15 minutes and then stretched
some. After a few strides we headed for the starting line.

There was a pretty large crowd for this race, which is usually
one of the smaller ones. Unfortunately quite a few newbies w/o
a clue as to the place to start from. We had one lane of Country
Club Road to start in, and after we started we both were seriously
penned in. Four young ladies had the way blocked yakking so everyone
behind had to deviate to the sidewalk (Claude did this) or out
into the other lane (I did this) to finally get around. I got
elbowed a few times and elbowed a few accidentally. There were
also several young 'uns that should have started further back
that we all ended up scooting around. At any rate, I ran the
first mile much too fast (7:12 - my PR 5k pace is 7:23), probably
    because I was irked.

Second mile I purposely slowed a little, but of course overdid it.
I was feeling OK until the last bit when a stitch started to hit.
The second mile came in at 7:30, need to speed up! I'd hoped that
I could pour it on in the last mile. I could see both Claude and
the woman I'm neck-and-neck with in the Grand Prix not that far
ahead of me. But as I started the third mile that stitch wasn't
quite ready to leave, so I checked pace just enough to keep it
from getting worse. After a min or two it did subside and I
started trying to pick it up. I actually made up a little ground
to the two ahead but wasn't able to go any faster and was
quickly running out of course. That last bit just wasn't up to
par and I knew it. I figured the early too-fast pace probably
blew me up too much. Anyway, the last 1.1 miles came in 8:20
for a finish time of 23:02.

No PR (mine is 22:54) this time, but it was a 70.91% WAVA. So
I consider it a "decent" run, but I'm a little disappointed
that I couldn't pull an extra 8 seconds! I have that "if I'd
only..." going on and on in my head. No AG award this time
either, I was fourth this time. Too many 45-49ers that are
fast! Only one 40-44 woman was ahead of me and just barely.
I do have to give it to first two in my AG, they are pretty
exceptional runners. But it was a nice day and it was, as
always, nice to see and chat with everyone again.

    How I did: AG 4/9
    All Women 16/94
    All Runners 103/237

    Thanks for reading!

Sounds pretty darn solid to me, T - nice job!

Question: as a very legitimate AG contender, why are starting more than
a couple rows back? IMO you shouldn't have to put up with all these
clowns clogging up the first half mile.

Good job, that's a very promising performance given that it was both warm and
crowded. If all goes well, you should be in for some big PRs this fall.

Hmmm, this is how it's done 😉 😉 Geez, I don't even like being able to
hear the people near me, never mind elbows. Well done to negotiate your
way through all that and not lose your cool.

Congrats! Well done, esp. considering heat / humidity and crowds.

Thanks Charlie. But, but, just *8 seconds* to that PR......

WHen we lined up it looked pretty good, but right before the
start a whole bunch of people just stepped in from the side. Next
year we'll start on the far lane side and closer to the front.
Normally the "locals" don't crowd in hard at the starts, which is
nice because then everyone can start running right off. But it
seems we had an unusually large amount of newbies that decided
to crowd in from the sidewalk when the gun went off. Oh well.

Thanks Donovan, I do hope so! I need to lay in PRs as soon as I can,
with the big 5-0 coming 'way too soon! ;-) But I am feeling that the
speedwork is making a difference, now to just keep at it over the
    long, dreadful summer!

Well, er, I didn't say anything to them (though I guess I should have!)
but I was feeling rather miffed. Though one of us that co-elbowed each
other did turn and we both panted "sorry" to each other.

Thanks Dot! I'm looking forward to fall when the heat comes down
again to give it another shot.

Wow nice job Teresa, you can't PR every time, or in conditions like that!

Now we just have to organise a bunch of newby elbowers to niggle you all

Close enough to be annoying, but also maybe close enough to be as good
(just imagine if the previous course was a mere 15yds short and this one
15yds long, the 8 seconds difference disappears)

In any case your very consistent and the lady behind you in the Grand Prix
won't be catching you anytime soon at this rate.

Thanks Tony! Yeah, I know....but I was hoping, with all the new speed
stuff this spring *maybe* I could PR at the 5000. But I guess with the
heat I should be happy that I was only 8 secs off. Ok, I'm happy! ;-)

Oh, if it were only that easy! :-) Unfortunately, (or maybe otherwise
for those who have to be around me...) I can't hold negative emotion for
very long. I guess I'm a product of being a teen in the 70's....after a
short bit I always figure "hey, it's cool".

Thanks Steve. I am striving to try for consistency, after all, I figure
I won't be able to smash any world records unless I can hold this speed
    for another two decades!!
