I've had a set of Candys for nine months now and overall really happy with them but the right one has gotten really stiff. The left one's fine so I'm a bit perplexed about that.
Anyway a re-build kit's about 35 bucks, it includes all the seals, bearings, bushes, screws and o-rings to overhaul a pair of egg beaters. Thing is it's not something I've done before so I'm a little bit unclear on what else is required, most specifically what grease do I use?
And other stuff that I can't think of 'cause I don't know the right questions to ask :p -- Cheers Euan

you could probably eek out some more life outta them by just greasing em up again
you should have got a grease adaptor bitty with pedals in box
from memory just attach hosing to grease tube and squeeze thru. Better yet, just unscrew endcap and undo allen-key bolt (or whatever is n there. can't be ares wandering out to shed...) and just pull apart (note order 😄), clean and relube.

Pedal rotation. I don't notice it too much when pedalling but if I turn it with my hands it takes noticeable effort. I reckon that's where the annoying creak every pedal stroke is coming from, I'll test that theory by putting Rocky's eggbeaters on it. -- Cheers Euan

Mine's stiff, because some thread from the leg warmers worked it's way in there somewhere (I really should have cleaned that out before it worked it's way in). Makes clipping in a [censored], because I've got to rotate the pedal manually instead of letting it weight itself.

Euan Its that white relatively low temp grease that you want to use. Its the same stuff you use for practically every thing on a bike. Cos high temp bearing grease is too thick. Its about the consistency of vasaline (which will do fine instead but wont last all that long. ) THat said it probably doesnt matter if you use high temp bearing grease in a pedal, its not going to slow you down like it might (a teeny bit) in a wheel?

i have a suspicion LBS's use different coloured lubes just so they can tell when you have been unfaithful! :-)

We use green or white grease, depending on which one we bought recently. The white grease is a lithium grease, it's supposedly a little better, but really ... grease is grease for what it gets used on in bikes. As long as it's got some water repellant ability (and what grease *isn't* hydrophobic?) ...

I've got a huge tin of "boating" grease which apparently has extra anti-corrosive goodness to it. I think it's intended for everything up to and including wheel bearings in boat trailers so I'm betting it's fine for everything I wasnt it to do.

OK. I have a pair of Candys on my mountain bike and I haven't had any problems with them (but I have only been on them for less than 20 rides).
Crank Bros are meant to have very good customer support so it could be worth dropping them a line.

Conservatively, I've put about 10,000kms on mine. Hmm, probably need to think about replacing my cleats soon too...
