In my vicinity, a 13 year old was forced against the sidewalk, causing him to crash whilst training on an open road, with hardly any traffic. The driver slowly pushed the 13 year old while driving up alongside him on the road!! It's about the third incident being reported in the news over a period of a couple of months.
I have experienced my fair share of a$$holes behind a wheel as well. Once, my dad was deliberately strafed- I could see the driver turning his head and laughing!
I suppose the distribution of rouge drivers kinda resembles the distribution of impatient, reckless [censored] of society in general. The important thing, is that I have a theory that this is a function of human personality in general, and not a consequence of lacking understanding.
Consequently, I have lost faith in preventive measures to reduce the amount of rogue drivers. It doesn't change the fact that there is, and always will be drivers who are more then happy to wipe out a few spandex-fellas.
Here's the important thing. If you get bit by a snake, chop its head off. If anything, it will make you feel better. As regards drivers, if you bite back, perhaps the threshold for badgering cyclists will increase. If enough drivers got their paint job screwed up or their kneecaps smithered, perhaps the world would indeed be a better place.
I am currently considering packing a gun, in case a car pulls over and the driver is 7 feet tall. A gun can be used to cause serious damage to the vehicle, as well as protecting yourself.
