It fixes to the seatpost, and the bag is supported by a metal 'tennis

Ah, now that looks quite good, although I don't think I saw it in the
new Spitalfields shop when I nipped in. I forgot to mention that
there's only two and a bit inches of seat post to play with. Would it
be OK do you reckon?

It would be just fine.
The full name is Altura Arran Expanding Post Pack
The bag attaches to the seat post using a bracket which is about 2 or 3 cm
high.

I bought the Ortlieb 2.7l one a couple of weeks ago.
I'm very pleased with it so far. It's been completely waterproof even
in the face of severe drenchings. The seams are "welded" somehow, and
the usual roll-up closure seems fairly impreganable.

pair of panniers) inside the fabric that goes from the top of the bag,
around the "nose", and back under the bottom - all the fittings are
through-bolted through this shell. The sides are fabric only.

For my commute, it'll carry a small toolkit, folded shirt, underwear
and socks etc.
I did a 200k event with it yesterday - took larger toolkit, 3 tubes,
race cape, bananas, energy bars, small lock, sandwiches, camera etc. -
seems like a good size for a day ride, and it wasn't full even with all
that on board.
The roll-up closure means you can extended or shrink the pack as
required.

The fittings to the bike are simple and quick. There's a tough plastic
receiver fitting that screws around your saddle rails. Then a clip on
top of the bag that slot into that receiver, clicking into place, and a
velcro that goes around the seatpost.

You can move the clip on top of the bag backward or forward about an
inch each way, so you can mount the bag at a variety of angles.
It is very steady though when attached - I haven't noticed any sway.
The clip on the top of the bag seems a little lightweight. It would be
easily replacable (it can be removed from the rails), but I may be
worrying unduly.

If you haven't got conventional saddle rails (e.g. a sprung Brooks),
there's an accessory kit available to strap it on to that.

Like you, I couldn't find it locally, so I mail ordered it from
www.rose.de - I had it in about 8 working days. If you use them, set
up a customer account before ordering. You can place an order without
one, but you can't track it's progress except by mailing them.

Thanks for that detailed reply! I always fancied the look of the large
Ortlieb so I've ordered one 'unseen' having gone through quite a few
London shops trying to find one in stock. It sounds exactly what I'm
after from your description - enough room for waterproof, food, tools
for one good day's worth of cycling (although that's more like 60 miles
max, no 200km ride yet!).

few small wedges, not much stock.

I was hoping to find one that was large enough to hold a few essential
tools, sandwiches and a waterproof/windproof top (in the current
weather, the last requirement might sound strange but I get quite
chilly even in this balmy weather).

Carradice Barley, in olive - 7L, you know it makes sense. Cast off your
inhibitions. You won't regret the extra space come the colder months.
