Something for those who believe the 53-16 on my fixie is an extreme
    gear!

    Wow.

With those tires, he might not even be able to pedal that thing away
from the line. Heaven help him if he needs to stop.

OMG! His front valve stem isn't between parallel spokes! How did they
    inflate the tire?!?!

Now that's a 'chain wheel' not 'ring'

They knew little about aerodynamics in those days. The chainring looks
great, but it would have been better as a plain disc at the sort of
speeds he no doubt intends to ride. Face it, he's not going to be going
uphill in that gear, so weight is fairly irrelevant.

It would take massive amounts of Dippidy Do to keep his coif in place at
    the expected blinding speeds, too.

Look at the contact patch length on that rear tire - the thing can't
have more than 30-40psi in it.

    Dear Mark,

A good point, but possibly mistaken.

Such pictures were often posed in studios on thick carpet--you can see
that it's a studio background, but it's hard to tell if the tire is
flat on a hard surface or sinking slightly in.

I can see thin spokes, but not any lines indicating hard wooden
    flooring.

There's a faint dark line on the sidewall above what looks like a long
contact patch, but it's so dark and shadowy that I can't tell if the
tire is bulging sideways at low pressure.

Normally, the tires on such a bike would be highly inflated, at least
    in use.

But you could be right--many track riders deflate their high-pressure
tires when not actually riding them.

Given the huge gear, it's either an impressive track-stand or else
retouched to hide a support. That's roughly a 100-tooth front
sprocket, assuming that it extends past 175mm cranks to about a 200mm
radius, good for about 65 mph at 90 rpm. Even with the tire inflated,
you might be able to stand on a pedal and fall over before you moved.
Presumably the bike was built for speed records and stunts behind
trains or cars, but even those lacked such huge gearing:

    http://www.bicyclelongisland.org/murphy/murphy.htm

The picture in the link shows Mile-A-Minute Murphy's 60 mph bike with
far from impressive gearing--and what looks a little like a good angle
on a flattened rear tire like the one that you're seeing.

With luck, someone will explain more details about how such pictures
    were posed.

    Cheers,

    Carl Fogel
