bike watching the wheels you built yourself spinning away beneath, the
chain lightly buzzing as it snicks into another gear, sun shining and

It doesn't.
I had to have a blood test this morning - I'm having to have them weekly
just now which is a bit of a bore - and I had a few other errands to do
in town, so I cycled in on my old Raleigh. I then dropped in on a few
friends on the way back, and ended up diametrically on the wrong side of
the ridge. So either I went quite a long way to round to cross the ridge
east of Screel, or quite a long way west to cross west of the Black
Breast; or take the old road over the top.
I haven't ridden the old road on something that wasn't explicitly a
mountain bike for twenty years, and I haven't ridden it without
suspension for about five years. But, nice day, and I was wearing SPD
shoes because I have SPDs on the Raleigh, so if I had to walk up... no
problem.
The Raleigh has 51/41 on the front and 13-21 on the back, but to my
surprise I was able to ride all the way up the climb. 28mm slicks are
not the perfect tyre for an unmetalled road, but... it was surprisingly
nice. Over the top, and there's 150 metres of vertical descent in 4Km,
and on a full suspension bike you just blast down it. On an old steel
road bike I most definitely did not feel like blasting down, but still
came down at a pretty good lick.
It was great. Modern bikes are brilliant, of course, and I really enjoy
riding them. But there's an old rigid mountain bike sitting in the shed
which might just get a bit of exercise in the next few weeks.
