Hi all having recently got a 2nd hand Dawes Super Galaxy tourer I'm getting ready for some summer trips and want to upgrade the forks. The existing ones are, I think, not original (there are no low-rider mounts and they don't match the frame colour). I also find the handling rather twitchy at the moment. In order to improve the handling (i.e. make the bike less twitchy) do I want more or less rake? Also, having never swapped forks on a bike before, am I likely to run into any compatibility problems? Thanks for any advice,
More rake should slow the handling down a bit. If the fork isn't stock there's a good chance that the axle to crown distance is shorter than intended, which increases the effective head tube angle. Compatability issues to think about are steerer tube diameter and threaded vs. threadless.
