  1. I am interested in purchasing some ultegra gear. On probikekit the component set is only $770 aussie dollars. They're ultegra wheels are only $400 aswell...this seems pretty awesome to me but I am worried about the inevitable. When something goes wrong? what can I do? do shimano replace the gear if I buy it off PBK or am i just buggered.

Better off to fork out the extra at my LBS or have I got nothing to worry about.

PS: do the LBS's repair gear that wasn't bought from there store?

  2. I assume that if you will be relying on the LBS for the work, you are probably not a person adept enough to install it yourself... So for you I would say to buy it where you will have it installed and avoid the worries... even if it costs a few dollars more.

Buying groups online is best left to the type of person that does their own maintenance.

If you will be doing your own work, then doen't worry about whether the LBS will work on it.

BTW - an LBS will do work on almost anything... I don't think they keep a log of who bought what to determine whose bike they will maintian. My LBS does work on bikes that were manufactured before the shop even existed... 😄

  3. Hi DM

I hope i can be of help here as i did exactly what you want to do earlier this year - only with Dura Ace

I asked PBK that exact same question - what happens with warranty?? their reply was that it was NOT an international warranty that came with the group, and if you had a problem with components inside the warranty period, to send the offending item back & they would determine if it were a warranty issue & replace/fix accordingly.

So short answer - your in for a lot of hassles if things do go wrong (especially if you have to pay someone to remove the bottom bracket/RD/FD/sti lever), but it is covered under warranty in UK. But please check with them - dont take my word for it, conditions change.

All in all, i bought the Groupset, had a friend (bike mechanic) help/teach me to install it, all went well & have now clocked 1300kms with only the usual cable adjustments needed so far🙂

OH and saved about AUD600 in the process😄

To answer your question on LBS fixing faulty gear - well i am sure they would, i just dont think it would be under warranty and would probably charge accordingly.

  4. These guys do pretty good for AUS $$ prices: http://www.cellbikes.com.au/category.php?id=7&PHPSESSID=932b020e94f4b6d5434492a950c14c9b

  5. Hmmm I think its still worth buying online and just getting the lbs to install it or fix it up at teh extra cost...maybe I could find a cycling buddy who knows what they are doing and they could help me out.

  6. I have bought much gear from Probikekit and have had very good results. They are normally very quick in delivery and the pack them reasonably well.

    Also have a look at:
    chainreactioncycles.comDefault.aspx

Careful though. They sell some older models. Good Luck...😉

I ordered a Shimano Hydro disc brake from Chainreactioncycles. It worked fine for 6 months, then its performance deteriorated (pistons would not retract).

I drafted up a polite, yet thorough letter detailing my dissatisfaction with the Shimano product (what was wrong with it, the steps I'd taken to try and fix the problem, etc) and sent the caliper and lever back to Shimano Australia accompanied with the order receipt (from the London store).

THey replaced it no questions asked.

I've just ordered a complete DA groupset from probikekit and have been buying stuff from their site for years

Shimano should warrant the product if it is bought new from one of their licensed dealers or if it was OEM on a new bicycle and have proof of purchase. You should not expect to be covered if you buy privately off of eBay or similar.

    Hi

A lot of the more progressive companies are embracing on-line sales and the challenges of warranty servicing.

Fizik for example warranty their products world wide, last week I had a problem with my Fizik Arione Carbon Braided saddle which I bought on-line from the States ($200 cheaper), Fizik in Italy arranged for a replacement to be couriered to me by the Australian distributor, even though I did not buy it here, they did not even ask for proof of purchase. This type of customer service creates life long customer loyalty.

Check with Shimano Australia to be absolutely sure of the international warranty, also I don't think you have too many problems with Ultegra straight out of the box, Shimano's quality control is excellent.
