1. gday people. my first post here on what looks like a brilliant site. well... i have recently bought an 05 Avanti Lightning to do the great victorian bikeride with, because my mongoose fell apart, stupid hunk of [censored]. anywho, i was wondering how hard this bike can be pushed, i wana do some downhill style riding, but not extremely rough, no high drops or anything. and i wouldnt mind jumping it aswell, even tho its a bit heavy im shure i can get it off the ground eventually. anyone who has ridden or has this bike please get back to me, i dont wanna go try sumthin and end up wrecking my bike,

Cheers, Top_aussie

2. Avanti, nice bike http://www.avantibikes.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=16 but,
the tyres suck! For a road ride that long, give some thought to a road tyre, Conti City Contact in 26"x1.5 will give you better on road service. http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/bicycle/themes/tires/city/citycontact/citycontact_en.html My GF has bought these for her new Sedona Giant. I have just tried them on her old Upland, they GO!!

I agree with George. Nice bike. Remember your life hangs on your tyres, and buy some which make pedalling enjoyable ( not hard work like those originally on your bike) and are still durable. Those that George suggested may be expensive but should fit the bill! Also make sure your bike is set up properly so that it suits a long road ride!

6. prob is tho. i also ride dirt racks and trails, so road tyres would be a waste of money

7. Ahhh, NOW I get it!!
You are doing the 1806 Great Victorian Bike Ride, cross country, NO Roads!!

It's simple. Keep the knobbies for the trails and get a pair of slicks for the GVBR. It's like having two bikes instead of one. You can get cheaper slicks than the Contis which will do the trick.

The description of the bike says that it should handle the sort of riding you describe. BUT, depending on your riding style, it's not hard to wreck any sort of equipment. A bad landing could bend a wheel or break a frame. Also depends how heavy you are. Perhaps your Mongoose would have lasted a long time if maintained well and ridden appropriately by a lighter rider. Bikes just don't self destruct.

10. Did you find yourself just staring at the bike when you weren't riding?
I have an '05 Avanti Barrracuda. Was just happy looking at it, let alone riding it.
First run in the bush and I new all those hours 'researching' aka dreaming about what I was going to get paid off! They just feel so right don't they.
Congrats on a good choice, you will be happy.

Warning tho. Ive put 4500kms on my bike in the last year, mostly commuting. Oh yeah its a good commuter as well.
Be brave and go the ContiSport 26x1.3's on road. 1 flat in 4 months - previous tyres - 4 flats in 1 week. Love kevlar. Love that grip (wet & dry)
I think I've outgrown the speed ability of mine and now 'research' aka lust for a carbon road bike. I mustn't keep letting the roadies pass me.
Faster, faster, ffffffaaaaaassssstttteeeerrr!
(insert Yoda voice here)
You will be hooked! you will be!

But for now, bomb that bike they can handle a bit of rough play.

11. cheers mate. oh man, when i got it it was sittin in the garage for a few days before i could take it down the tracks, everyso often id just go out and stare at it, take it out for a pedle down the street and back, then stare at it some more. man its a great bike. now i want one of them full suspension downhill beasts.
oh man, that is pure lust
