Royce Union?

The pics look very good. What little I can tell on this bike from the
web indicates that it might actually have an aluminum frame though I
find that hard to believe considering it didn't sell for much new. It's
about 5 years old and, per the pics I viewed, it appears to be in
excellent condition.

Is this a decent starter bike that won't make me hate biking : ) Or
should I just save up and wait (months) until I can put together the
cash for something nicer? I have to purchase a bike carrier for my car
and a helmet too so it all adds up : (

I went to my local bike shop and didn't see a men's bike in there for
under $500. I'm 5'10" and 225lbs so I need something that won't fall
apart the minute my fat butt sits on it.

This is most likely in the FAQ, but....
Royce Union is pretty close to the bottom of the barrel. Aluminum isn't
an exotic material, or a sign that this is a quality frame. Almost all
my bikes are steel.
Seller is also most likely lying about having purchased it in a bike
shop, as new RU's are exclusively sold through big box-type stores. I
wouldn't buy anything off ebay if I were you. You'd have to be very
lucky to find a decent bike that would fit you.
For $500 you should be able to find something that fits the bill.

Rocky Mountain Oxygen on eBay a little over a year ago for about $500.
I'm still riding it.

I've don't pretty good on eBay a few times. In fact all the bikes I
have ever bought on eBay I turned around and resold at a higher value.
If you know what to look for, do a check on the seller, and ask for
specific photographs, and KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT you can do pretty
well.

You're ignoring the "if I were you" part of the ebay statement. No
slight intended towards Mark, but does he sound like someone familiar,
experienced, and savvy enough to select the wheat from the chaff on an
unseen bike?

Mark, in this case, I strongly recommend the advice of Hal the
Mechanic: don't purchase a bike from anyone you can't punch in the face
(if need be) afterwards. Buy locally, stay away from full suspension,
make sure you don't have to force your body to fit on the bike.
craigslist.com would be a better solution than ebay.

Personally, I wouldn't purchase a used aluminum-framed bike on ebay.
But what do I know?

Royce-Union made bikes for sale in department stores, sporting goods
stores and other non-bike-shop outlets. Some of theirs weren't too
bad, but the majority were low-end. $100 is more than I'd pay for a
used one, even if it was one of their better units, unless it had been
subjected to some serious upgrades.

225 isn't all that heavy, but I'd stay away from the cheap [censored] at
Walmart and Target. Their $200 bikes are sometimes tolerable, but I
doubt that any of their one-size-fits-maybe frames will be big enough
to work for you. Their cheap bikes are...cheap.
