Last year we purchased a coverstar automatic pool cover. It has been a total disappointment. The concept is great, but the cost of ownership is ridiculous. It is sold with the idea that you can open and close it multiple times a day if you desire. Ours has been a mechanical nightmare. We have had multiple broken ropes and other problems. The first year while under warranty, the installing company, A Automatic Covers, was here five times. We opened the pool this year and boom a broken rope. They fixed it and two weeks later, another broken rope. The second time we were out of warranty and the requested amount for the repair was $1100.00! We have been forced to completely discontinue the use of the cover because of the cost of operating it. It now sits totally idle and detracts from the beauty of our pool. The cover can't be uninstalled without re-pouring the pool deck.
If you are thinking of buying an automatic cover, I strongly caution you. They are expensive to install and even more expensive to operate. If we were to do it again, we would have purchased a nice water feature instead.
PS. The claim that it can be used as a barrier instead of a fence fell on deaf ears in my county. Don't buy it to substitute for a fence unless you check your local codes first.

wow, one would think this sort of thing would fall under a "lemon law" similar to California's lemon law when buying a new car. Not sure if it pertains to anything else though, but it outta be a law nonetheless. I think you should report the installer to the BBB for selling you a defective product, then charging you to repair it out-of-warranty when it never was right to begin with.

Thanks for the warning. I'm sorry to hear this didn't work out for you. We are new pool owners and just purchased a solar cover and a reel. But we haven't installed it yet. Probably going to wait for spring now since we're closing the pool next week.
If you had it fixed during the warranty period, and have receipts, small claims court is a definite consideration. I suspect you'll win the cost of the repair/replacement.
