Same at the school our eldest will probably attend. Parents and bus drivers drive like
tossers, solution: get everyone else off the road (i.e. don't even think about addressing the
actual problem).

There will be far less chaos than if every parent took their kid to school by car!!! There would need to be suitable storage though.

I work at a university that has very poor storage for commuters (limited and out doors).

I am a racing cyclist and when in halls, was told that I was not allowed a bike in my room and the university couldn't provide any covered/secure space for my bike to be kept. This is a really sad situation given that I go to a university that has one of the biggest and most succesful Exercise and Sport Science Departments in it. Needless to say, I kept my three bikes in my room!!!!

SO.........when his bike is stolen what then, then you would be onto the shcool for a replacement or
hassle the shcule to get decent deterrents & they haven't even the resources to teach the children
let alone worry about bike security

its not 1970 its 2003......... I used to cycle to school in the 70's........wouldn't even allow my
son to ride his bike to skooooooool unless he took the English bull terrier as the ''lock''....

I didn't du 2 well at skuul , never got the grasp of why I was there
!!!!!!!!

hence the /git mode on/ gents. Personal view, ideal situation...however, those pessimistic types
would view 300 bikes all turning up at the same time, trying to access 300 cycle parking spaces
etcetc as potential chaos. You've seen the TdF when they all start falling over. Just imagine it in
the rush to leave school at the end of the day... ;-)

At a secondary school? Sounds like sheer [censored]. Bad enough trying to get 800-2000 kids off the
grounds and onto buses and pavements.

I can only visualise it for about half a second before my brain blots it out. It'd be like a cross
between those films of the ship yards finishing for the day and (very wobbly) massed start race,
with punching and bag throwing involved. I'm coming to see the reasoning of it all.

Kids should be banned (was going to add something about bikes but wont bother).

Indeed. I like the bit in the report where it says that there are possible plans for cyclists to be
able to leave their bikes at a local leisure centre and walk the rest of the way (i assume it isn't
that much of a walk.)

If the vehicles make the road so dangerous. Surely the sensible course of action would be for the
buses and cars to drop off at the leisure centre and leave the road for people to safely cycle and
walk down???

I suggest a new policy: "Carelessly driven motor vehicles are the leading cause of death in school
children in the UK, so regrettably the school cannot allow students to be brought to school by car.
Ample secure cycle parking is provided, and there is an excellent and frequent bus service. We have
made arrangements with the Council to allow those parents who insist on using cars to drop their
children at the station bus stop, which is approximately ten minutes' walk from the school and
served by a bus every eight minutes during peak periods"

The difference is that if they are going on the bus, they _have_ to get to the bus at a certain
time. If they are going by bike, they leave whenever they are ready, which will give a much
wider departure window; so you wouldn't get quite the same chronic situation. It would also help
if the school located several cycle storage units around the site, rather than having them all
in one place.

The problem, IMO, lies with the parents. Little Johnny falls over little Billy's bike and grazes his
knee. Johnny's mother sues the school for umpteen thousand pounds. "He'll be ... like ... damaged
for life, he will," said Johnny's shell-suit wearing, chain-smoking mother. Johnny's father could
not be found.

Billy's parents are also considering legal action. They saw a bandwagon and jumped.

As much as I dislike it, I can see why schools ban the use of bikes on their property.

I can't. It is only bikes that they pick on. Other things that "shell-suit wearing, chain-smoking
