I am off to Snowdon in a week or so and was thinking of walking Cadair on theThursday evening before moving on to Snowdon.....my lad said about camping up near the summit on the night and coming off the mountain next morning.
Is it allowed and where might be the best spot to camp if so.

Was it George Borrow who met a shepherd on Cadair Idris, who told him the he "declared that there was no higher mountain in The World"?

There's a bothy at the top, sleeps about 12 at a pinch, leastways about that number came out having spent the night there as I walked in.

cheers.
I had a rather uncomfortable night in a tent somewhere on the side in December about 8 years ago. The poles still have the bends in from the wind. If I were you, I'd go for the bothy.

I didn't get the chance to speak to the group of 30 somethings leaving, the older chap, left inside in a sleeping bag, and his dog said it was an annual event for that party, he just turned up late and gatecrashed. He was eccentric to say the least, what his state of mind had been previously I don't know!
When I was up last year (or it might have been 2004), the bothy was pretty rank. It looked like sheep (and humans) had been using it as a loo. I would have thought you could camp in the shelter of the bothy walls(which was what we did to eat our sandwiches). Like the other, I wouldnt want to camp up there with the wind as it is.

I was there last year..seemed ok as a refuge. Having said that, I don't mind sleeping in loos 🙂
The loos at Once Brewed must be the most luxurious camping in the kingdom.
BTW the refuge is not marked on my map, I believe it (the map marking) was removed for 'safety reasons' -- Seeya, [censored]. Do not reply directly, mail to this address is never read.
Cadair is a fine mountain with extensive views & well worth spending a night on. The only problem is that there isn't much water near the summit but if you follow the ridge east from the trig you should come to a saddle with a hollow to the south containing a spring & stream. The location also gives shelter from the prevailing westerlies & fine views in the morning down across the Dysynni valley.
