  1. Thought this might be of interest to the group

It's an article talking about how more and more people are going up into
hills without proper equipment (map, compass, etc), getting stuck and
calling emergency rescue services instead of unsticking themselves.
Certainly on my last Kinder walk there was a group up by the 633 trig
point that looked like foreign students, dressed in normal street
clothes, with no map that I could see, all drinking cans of Stella as
    they walked!

Missed that one, nicely balanced article, states that there are good points
too and this hasn't been cut down to an ending sentence in the name of
journalism. They've let the MR bloke get on with giving his advice and not
    interfered.

The list of injuries over one weekend is rather misleading in such an
article though? I was expecting a catalogue of errors in there, such as
"woman in high heels rescued from crib goch", the rescues all sounded
reasonable from what i could see.

Agreed though it does reinforce the usual -

"Rather than spending a wet night out or using some proper navigation
and finding their own way down safely, they just press the button and
    call us out,"

"People are depending on them as the first line of defence. They will go
out with no map and no compass and no whistle - but they have a mobile
    phone."

It is also pointed out that MRT members are volunteers. They may start
to wonder about the wisdom of having time off work to haul people off
the hills who probably shouldn't be there.

simple answer - charge those that have been deemed to have been
inappropriately rescued the cost for their rescue... and watch the number of
    unnecessary calls plummet dramatically...

    Complicated answer.

And likely the only people to benefit from a system like that would be
    the lawyers.

or better, you have to take out private insurance without which you dont get
    rescued at all 🙂

    Or better ......

If you dont have insurance, and your more than say 10M from the
highway, your mobile phone automatically blocks calls to the emergency
    services.
