It is very unusual for a Grand Tour to begin with a Team Time Trial, but in the 1980s this happened twice on the date in the Giro. The 1982 Giro started with a show of force by Bernard Hinault's Renault team, and he would finish as he began by carrying the race lead into Milan. And a year later it was the Bianchi team that lifted the Swede Tommy Prim into pink in the team event after the scheduled prologue was annulled.
