As my Chinese level and my relationship with the bike shops continue to
improve I periodically get asked to do translation work.
Tonight, at dinner, I got asked exactly what does "livestrong" mean.
They know all about the cancer foundation and Lance and this that and
the other but what does the word "livestrong" mean. Is it a word like
"mavic" or "bontrager" that doesn't really have a meaning or what?
I gave them my best guess and was subsequently asked if I could write
that up in Chinese and give it to the bike shop manager for the next
time someone asks them "what does livestrong mean?" but before I do
that I want to run my interpretation by a bunch of other English
speaking bike people.
So, here goes...
The word "livestrong" is a play on words. It can be seperated into two
words "live" and "strong." Strong means strong. Life is the opposite
of death. Armstrong didn't die from cancer, so he lives strong. He
has a strong life. At the same time, since Lance's family name is
Armstrong, it refers to his family name.
Unlike Chinese names, most personal names in English have no literal
meaning. However, many family names do have a literal meaning.
Armstrong literally means someone with a strong arm. He's really
someone with strong legs rather than strong arms but we don't think all
the Chinese people surnamed [censored] are kings either.
Yellow jerseys are for winners, yellow bracelets are for people who are
inspired by the concept of winning, and winning over a disease (living
strong) means more than just winning a race.
....
Would you people say this is more or less accurate??
