ear protection

i listen to music on in ear headphones and keep the volume realtive low, it both gives me a sound track and keeps the wind noise at bay.

counterintuitively, with the buds in and my music low enough i can actually hear traffic better, without the wind howling.

i also wear a really ight weight ear covering perl izumi skullcap under my helmet. the microfiber thing, it works as a sweatband and an ear cover. pretty handy.

Thats something I've never noticed. I know there is noise when its windy but it never seems to bother me. Maybe you get used to it?

Thanks for the suggestions. I've thought about getting an iPod and listening to music on my rural rides as well, but I wasn't sure the ear buds would actually keep out the wind. So that's an idea.

Would you happen to have a URL for the skull cap?

Maybe it is related to the shape of your ears, but I hate the wind noise and find it very demotivating. I have tried several types of headphones, and some actually make the wind noise worse. The best type of headphone for my ears to buffer the wind are Nike branded for running and wrap around the back of your head.
I have found that the only thing that blocks the wind noise though is a skull cap type of thing or headband to cover your ears, which is fine when it is below 55 deg, but above that too hot to wear. I have thought about making something just to cover my ears in normal warm weather, hoping the reduced noise compensates for the high dork factor, but never have got around to it. I always wondered if I was the only one since no one else seems to complain about it.

Lol, well there are a lot of ways. Larger headphones maybe with a hat. Ear muffs over the smaller headphones. Try it all out to see what you like.

There used to be a product from South Africa called "Foilers"...a spoiler blade that attached to the helmet strap in front of the ear with Velcro. It seems to have died due to...not really working or zero sales...who knows? The same dude came up with 'Slipsteamz': slipstreamz.comslipstreamz.comOpen ↗

Funny! Couple weeks ago a buddy had these on, I thought they looked like Elvis sideburns and told him. Now I see the model online! :lol:

If I wore that I don't think I would be able to fight the urge for long to say a quick "thank you very much" in a deep Elvis like voice...
