Vernon, £70 is not bad if it is considerably better than you can buy new for £70 (not hard), But: 1, Acera is fairly entry level spec and probably obsolete now. 2, Upgrading to anything better than this will almost certainly end up costing more than a new bike (and you'll probably get an ally frame and rock (ish) shox to boot
if it does what you want without any large upgrade it's probably ok, Have a good look at it first and compare it to what you can get new.

Could we stop using "ally" and say alu or aluminium, please.

Alu is an even nastier contraction than ally.
pedant mode on/
Its not aluminium. Its an alloy of which aluminium is a major component. Are you seriously asking that we use aluminium alloy or even a more precise description when ally is well understood and accurate enough to successfully convey the meaning?

I paid a visit to the vendor and found that it was exactly what I wanted, a lightweight hybrid bike with sufficient lugs and clearance to allow the fitting of mudguards and rear rack. What's more the bike is essentially brand new having been ridden for little more than five miles in the past five years.
I took a more knowledgeable cyclist with me who is now rather jealous of the addition to my garage. My wife was not pleased however..."what do you want with three bikes?" did not require a rational answer only an admission of stupidity and submission to a beating ;bbb-)

Couldn't match it weight for weight for less than £250

Nah. The term is in common useage. Might stick in your craw but the majority of folk know what the term means :-)
