Hi
I've moved to germany and am looking for an online shop to purchase cogs/cranks etc. I have 2 problems, tho:
1. Any shops that you would recommend? 2. Any site(s) that gives the german equivalent for english terms (like 'fixed gear' == ? in German)?
Tks for any info

I would try to find a shop that specializes in racing and then go there and try to make myself understood. If you're in the Hedelberg/Mannheim area you could give this place a try:
http://www.radsport-altig.de/Seiten/Start.html
I haven't been there in almost 30 years but it was pretty fascinating back in those days. It's owned by a former tdf pro, and I think that if no one understood the term "fixed gear" you could try to describe it as like a track bike or without a derailleur.

Maybe you can ask your neighbour.
Lou
Excellent, tks for that. Heh, re: asking my neighbor - I tried, but our, ah, communication just wasn't flowing - I'll ask my German instructor if he knows.
Thanks for the links

http://dict.leo.org/ may help, though sometimes it provides too many equivalents!
I've heard Ritzel may do for gear, and I think Bahn may mean track, if that helps.
There's always photos and sketching...

Hey, thanks - that is actually a pretty good site. I've figured out that track bikes are 'bahnraeder' (german 'a'😉, and track frames are 'bahn rahmen' - it looks like there are quite a few suppliers - tho' some are a bit pricey.
Thanks for the link 'n info.

Ritzel means cog. Gang means gear.

That would be better ;-) Fixed gear = Nur einen Gang und keine freilauf (freewheel) Nabe (Hub).

Ritzel means cog. Gang means gear.
Cog means tooth. Cog does not mean sprocket, gear, or toothed wheel. Ritzel means pinion or sprocket.

No, way up north on the Danish border, in Flensburg.

Freilauf!! (or, rather 'kein(e) freilauf'😉. That's the word I was looking for.
Thanks

Hi, you got many results already. But if you look for a local bicylce-shop you can always ask in de.rec.fahrrad. Although its a german language group, there are enough English understanding readers. IMHO noone protests for this special question in English.
Yours Alexander
