looking to do some upgrades on my bike but don't really know to much, at the moment I have Shimano SIS front and rear mech, I've just bought new wheels with Shimano LX 9 speed cassette, question is will any rear mech fit (9 speed obviously), I'm looking at Shimano XT levers and Front and rear derailleurs, Quite a general question but it's been 15 years since I stripped down a bike.
What is short and long cage and what difference do they make
Any help will be much appreciated and I'm sure I got a few more posts later.
The difference between a long and short cage rear derailer is the number of chain links of slack it can take up. What's the spread on the Front chain rings and rear cassette? For example 52x39 and 12x26 vs 44x30x22 and 34x11 (std on most MTB bikes)

If it's 9 speed and a long cage you should be OK.

44x30x22 and 34x11, that sounds about right, I'm gonna need a new chain as well, I'm looking at the SHIMANO HG-93 Deore XT 9, no idea why but it sounds good 🙂 . Just trying to get the bike going again, just started riding after quite a few years layoff and forgot how much I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the maintenence and upgrading as much as riding but it all seems a bit different now, so would I need short or long cage for this setup.
