Huge subject this morning on TfL's free breakfast in London today. General gist is that we scratch
cars, jump red lights, ride on pavements and should be insured.

I am.
Strangely the fact that 90% of drivers freely admit to breaking the law doesn't seem to stop them
moaning about us doing it.That said, London motorists' obsession with the many and various ways in which bikes make progress
when the cagers are gridlocked is almost heartwarming. I sit here thinking, "Go on, keep on about it
just a little bit longer, another couple of minutes and you'll spot the blindingly obvious."Silly sods. Why take a two-ton pollution machine when it's quicker by bike?

"I'm a full time cyclist, having given up driving due to the extraordinary costs and frustration of
using the roads. The TfL breakfast is just a publicity stunt which is backfiring as it makes
cyclists out as freebie seekers. Regarding cycling paths, these are often badly designed and slow
down the average cyclist. We do have the legal right to use the roads, I for one never use the
pavements or pass red lights. In discussions I have read, it is often a motorists perception that
red light jumping is okay on a cycle, and a lot of motorists do have bicycles - it's not the regular
cyclists that abuse the rules. You make a very valid point regarding trains and cycles. Next year,
matters will be made worse when slam-door trains are taken out of service, and no replacement for
the 'cattle carriage' is made.Nick"

Not the bike. It is you as a cyclist who is, probably, insured---third party liability. It is that
insurance which some cagers whinge about and it is that insurance most of us have by default.Colin

Father in law told me that he heard on the radio that there is a guy down south dressed as a

stunt. I sort of participated in it today, by offering to act as a steward on a bike bus to the free
breakfast in Covent Garden. Fortunately no newbies turned up - just as well because if they had they
would probably have been turned off. Of course we used LCN signed (and unsigned) routes, which only
confirmed my hatred of them. The problem is the cycling lobby itself, a significant part of which
thinks that, because non-cyclists think that cycle lanes are safer, the way of getting more of them
on bikes is to lobby for segregated facilities - even if they don't actually think they are safer
themselves.Rich

I was responding to the general chat of the show. It was along the lines that we're all green
hippies who hate cars and pay no taxes. The motorists were irate that we get treated to a free
breakfast when be pay bugger all to the system. They pay £25 a week in congestion charges alone and
want a free breakfast themselves. They also kept on about the 'no insurance' bit, although someone did mention the household 3rd
party liability insurance. I was told by a friend who teaches law about some European law that says
that if a bicycle and car are involved in an accident, it is always 100% the drivers fault. Any
truth in this? -

Ah, well, they could have had a free breakfast if they wanted - all they had to do was get out of
their cages for a day and go by bike for once. I think it should be a compulsory part of all driver
training, an essential to get a licence ;-). In any case I'm sure they wouldn't really have wanted
to go through all the faff of finding a place to park in Central London, paying for it, giving up
their heated/air conditioned comfort and do the strenuous exercise of walking to & from their cars
to get their breakfast!Quoted message said:

Yes, this is a fav theme isn't it? As for household 3rd party liability insurance, I think that if
anyone is seriously intending to rely on this should circumstances arise where they might need to,
they had better check the policy details very carefully first. Just because a policy includes theft
cover for cycles, and third party liability cover, it doesn't necessarily mean you're covered for
damage you do to someone while out cycling on a bike, and even if does there could be limitations on
its applicability.Quoted message said:

There was something on the Beeb about this a while back and briefly discussed here. I think it's
basically true - the insurance industry was up in arms complaining about how if Europe imposes this
on the UK, premiums would have to rise substantially to pay for it, and the motoring lobby was
complaining about that. Of course 'we' were saying that there's no reason why they should have to
rise by anything like what was being suggested.Rich
