Baby seat help?

I will only ride at walking speed with her.

Can't. Seapost racks can't support a baby safely. Look for a baby backpack
or something similar.

When my kids were small I bought bike seats so my wife and I could take
the kids out on the local bike trail. I found them very difficult to
ride with. It is hard to get the kid into the seat and then get on the
bike without dropping the whole thing. Your leg has to go over the top
tube or the bars. With a loaded bike seat the bike is top heavy and
unstable. If you should be so unfortunate as to crash, the kid is
strapped to the bike which I don't think is a good thing. After a couple
trial runs, I never used the bike seats again. I have friends who are
very happy with a kid trailer such as the burley. Trailers are expensive
but I would think they are easy to sell when you are done with them if
they are in good condition. Maybe you can find one on Craig's list to buy.

If you want to use a rack-type kid seat you need a hardtail bike. I've
ridden both my kids hundreds of miles in these things, including long
trips in hawaii etc. They take some getting used to, especially
mounting the bike leg-forward.

If you are going slow and staying off busy streets, and your kid knows
enough to hang on tight, you might consider conseider carrying him/her
on your shoulders ... I've done that too. Put a helmet, long pants and
a jacket on the kid, and be prepared for little hands suddenl;y
covering your eyes.

My experience was the opposite. After trying both trailers and a
securely mounted rear childseat we ended up using the childseat almost
exclusively for many thousands of miles. Better communication with the
child, easier handling bike, and no more experiences where the child
manages to undo the seatbelt and starts to climb out of the trailer
while moving.

However, I am not familiar with the OP's bike model and it may well be
difficult to properly mount a childseat if it has a rear suspension
arrangement.

PS to "Ask"

As far as carrying a child in front of you - I've modified frames for
an extra seatpost mounted to the top tube. It works fairly well and is
very secure, but you have to pedal with your knees spread.

You probably wouldn't want to butcher your FSA ....

A full-suspension mountain bike simply isn't the right machine for a kid
seat. The normal attachment points would have the rack mounted to parts of
the frame that are moving relative to each other, which won't allow for a
workable solution. And you certainly wouldn't want to try and mount a seat
to a rack that mounts to the seatpost only... those are marginal for any
load over 15 pounds or so, and the failure mode wouldn't be pretty.

Best bet would be to get a klunky basic mountain bike or hybrid and use that
for the kid, or a trailer.

I love the Wee-Ride center mounted child carrier. It can handle up to
40 lbs. Both my 3 year old and 1 and a half year old love riding in
it. They can see the road clearly, they're right in front of me, where
we can talk without me taking my eyes off the road.

There must be many people who use and like bike seats. I guess I never
got used to them. When the kids got a little bigger, I rigged a seat on
the top tube and some foot pegs on the down tube. They rode in my arms
and held onto the handle bars. This was fun, cozy and made it easy to
talk to them. It did require me to pedal with my knees apart and could
make it hard to see past their helmet. At 6 my daughter learned to ride
her own bike and my boy picked it up a few days later at 4.

I have a topeak. It uses a standard looking rack to hold the seat in place.
When you don't nead the seat, you can use the rack like a standard rack.
I've used it a few times and it feels odd when I stand and my son is on the
back. When you sit, you don't really notice the extra weight. If I was buying
again, I would look at one of the seats that places your child in front of you.
It makes more sense to have the extra weight in the middle of the bike rather
than way out back. Your child will also get a better view when they are in
front.

I'd recommend the Rhodes Gear Limo. I had my 40lb child in one on my tourer.
It comes off the bike via a blackburn expedition rack, This also makes it
nice to travel with on the car or buses. The rack is suitable for panniers
or whatever when the seats off as well. Good luck on whatever you decide

The Rhodes Gear Limo also reclines, and will sit up when on the ground like
a child seat if your little ones decides to take a nap like our did 🙂
