Random User said:Hello,
I am frustrated by flat tires and struggling to mount tires on (narrow)
rims. I
am wondering if the following fancier tire levers will help:
1 the Park Tool TL-10,
2 the Kool Stop Bead Jack,
3 the Crank Brothers Speed Lever, and
4 the Quick Stick.
Another question. Do tubes made by Slime work well in minimizing
punctures?
TIA.

Dear Mike,
You'll get a good deal of mixed advice about the levers and
the Slime tubes.
Concerning tire levers, I find that it's easier to use my
hands, but my rim and tire combination may be looser.
Sometimes it helps people to go over the details of the
process, since it's next to impossible to remove a tire the
wrong way.
Recently, Tim McNamara, Paul Kassel, Peter Creswell, and
Ozark Bicycle all praised the Crank Bros. lever on RBT, and
Simon Brooke said that he even gave it to friends as a gift
on a recumbent newsgroup.
Concerning Slime tubes . . .
If you carry a small paper clip hooked through your tool bag
zipper to help poke stubborn thorns out of your tires
because the metal tongue on a watch-band is too clumsy, then
Slime tubes are worth trying.
But unless you're pulling goathead thorns out of your tires
fairly often, I doubt that Slime tubes will help. They've
worked well for me on pinhole punctures, but not for larger
rock-chip cuts.
It's annoying when a little green Slime sprays out with a
dramatic whoosh-whoosh-whoosh through a larger hole, but it
seems worthwhile when I pull a tube out and find a few wisps
of those tiny white fibers sticking out innocently, here and
there, plugging several pinholes that may have been there
for a dozen rides.
Cheers,
