Cross-type tire for MTB

How wide are they? Checked Hutchinson's web site (F#$%#ing flash [censored])
and can't find anything similar. The narrowest tire I could find was 2".
Not that I could stand to spend much time on their website. Could not
find a tire called the 'Tech'

Avocets are a pain to find unless your local shop is willing
to put up with their somewhat unique distribution scheme.
You can always order them from Harris Cyclery if you can't
get them locally.

might be a little too tame. I'll check them out.

_ They work quite well as long as the surface isn't loose enough
to fill up the gaps and turn it into a slick tire. If you want
something that works pretty close to a slick on the road, but
can deal with typical dry dirt road conditions or gravel bike
path these work well. If you need something for deep loose sand
or mud, then they can get quite squirrelly.
