For the first time in my life I was admitted to hospital last week, with palpitations (AF), and was given electric cardioversion after 12 hours, chemicals hadn't worked.
I'm 43, used to be a binge drinker (stopped two years ago), and drink too many coffees, also a smoker. Could this alone explain the onset of AF at my age? I was really frightened, but wasn't given any medicine on discharge (I take some daily aspirin, anyway). The echocardiogram didn't show anything abnormal. Will have 24hour ECG soon.
Any advice from anyone who has experienced the same? Thanks for any replies.

The same thing happened to me but I could not have cardioversion as the echo showed leaky valves. I have read that heavy drinking etc can cause AF, therefore, if you have no heart damage, the best thing you can do to avoid a repeat is to avoid all caffeine. Quit smoking if you can. Personally I hated being in AF so now you have had this happen to you heed the warning and live a healthier lifestyle. Sounds dull but if your echocardiogram showed no abnormalities it would be good to take steps to keep it that way. Best wishes, Diana (now with new MV and pacemaker too).
