I have written to this group before and had a good response, so now I have another question and wonder if I could get some answers for it.
I am on amiodarone for irregular heart beat. Due that I also have a leaking heart valve. I was told when I went on this medication four years ago, that it is a potent drug and need to have a regular test done for the liver and eyes. Now I am having my eyes check every half a year and they are fine. My thyroid has been not so good and I am now on eltroxin. Now my question is, how often should I have my liver checked?. Once a year or every half a year, and how is it done? . Is it only a blood test? That was done last year. All what my doctor seems to be interested, is my blood pressure and that is in control with medication, so I am ok. Although often I do not feel ok, low pulse and often tired and still quit a bit of skipping of the heart.

I also take amiodarone. I have my liver and thyroid checked once a year with a blood test. Amiodarone and certain blood pressure drugs can sometimes cause a low pulse.

Hello Ben, I found this drug impossible to take. I got blinding headaches and I think the long list of possible serious side effects would put anyone off. If your liver neds to be checked doesn't the cardiologist say how often it should be done? It does not sound like something you can decide for yourself. The liver is such an important organ. Is amiodarone the only possibility for you? (I now have a pacemaker and feel better even though there are other things wrong with my heart). Very best wishes, Diana.
Thank you Ed and Diana for your reply. I just wanted to make sure how often a liver test has to be done, while I am on amiodarone. For I have learned in the past that you have to ascert yourself with the doctor, for they do not always think about it. Like, when I had problems with the thyroid, my doctor never thought about it that is was caused by the med. for 9 month, I was horse and he thought that it was from my sinuses, but then after 9 months, I hardly could walk and then he though about it, that it could be my thyroid. Now my thyroid is not working any more. I wanted to make sure that not the same thing would happen with my liver. I feel so tired and my pulse is so low. Like last night, I took my blood pressure and my pulse was 43 and during the day it is around 55 and after a stiff 4 km walk it is barely over 60. I think that it might be caused by the leaking heart valve I have or by the medication Anyway, thanks for listening and I will ask my doctor for a blood test for the liver. Ben ps. Otherwise, amiodarone, works well with me and no other side affects

Ben, re your leaking heart valve - has no one suggested surgery or do they consider it is not bad enough?. I don't think it is good to be so tired or to have such a low heart rate. When I was first diagnosed the cardiologist said "it's not desperate, you can go home (from the hospital)". I believe that if I had let it go at that I would still be waiting for my surgery. I asked him "is that it, is there no operation?". After that I managed to get a lot more information. In the UK I believe there are many older people who have not been given the chance of valve surgery, just to keep the lists down. Diana
