No, it probably wouldn't work. I think cyclists are the type who like to walk into a shop, talk a
little to the owner, and then buy the parts they need.Online? As in buying from a computer? What's next, online dating? Come on, man. :-)
Dave
P.S. There are tons of online bike stores and you can find every single significant one in the
Yahoo.com bicycle directory. -
Type:
"bicycle shop free shipping".
Bought a frame pump that and shipping costs were almost as much as the pump's price.

IMHO online shopping is suitable way for buying components you think you can buy without thoroughly testing them first. Of course, it might not be sensible to e.g. order shoes and other apparel that has to fit more or less perfectly (I've even ordered shoes). Obviously enough, fitting and testing can be done in a local bike store.
You might not want to order single, inexpensive parts, like pumps, from webstores because of the shipping charges. Also, it depends where you live in. European orders from US-based stores easily become quite pricey.
Just to mention one store: Chain Reaction Cycles (UK).

I agree! Last week I placed an order from Nashbar on Monday evening which was shipped 2nd day air. I received it Thursday afternoon as promised! The Savings on sale items more than outweighed the shipping costs.Shoes: Were $111, paid $60= -$51
Computer: Was $50, paid $25= - 25
Helmet: Was $40, paid $18= - 22
____
Savings: -$98
Less Shipping: 9
____
Total Savings: -$89!All of the above items were available at various LBSs but at full retail.
If you do your due diligence, and do some comparison shopping on shopping can be, surprisingly, very economical.
