I understand the mechanism wherein a plaque breaks off or a blood clot forms and obstructs a heart artery thereby causing a heart attack. Also, in a like manner, an obstruction of a brain artery causes a stroke.
What happens when a smaller obstruction makes its way to one of the limbs before it lodges and blocks the blood flow? Does the tissue or muscle die? Or does the flow eventually clear like some of the veinus blood clots that hang up before they reach the heart of lungs? Is this the cause of some of the aches and pains that seem to come and go?

It can. However, there is better collateralization in the limbs so that this is less common.
