  1. Okay. how can i gain ab strength:

Current state: When doing a push-up with legs at 90 degrees, I can like
BARELY do that without breaking form or using momentum wih my arms
crossed on my cheswt.. I tried with a 5 pound weight. REALLY DOESN'T
    WORK.

    Sugestions?

I don't have access to pull-up bas, but i have dumbells.

  2. If you do work for your "core" region this will help the ab strength. Look
up how to do a bridge or plank and these will help build the strength.
Also, stability ball exercises are good as well.

I'm assuming you don't have access to a gym.

Using a "Swiss ball" as Adam suggests is a great idea. If you have access
to a gym, they have crunch machines that allow you to start sitting up, so
you can start with very little weight. If at home (provided you can do
them), lay on the floor, knees bent and hook your toes under your couch and
do sit-ups. Once you can do at least 10, you can start to add weight.

The key is to be consistent. Work your abs on a regular basis...say every
other day. Even every day is fine at this point for you. But be
consistent, and you'll get stronger. The reason your abs are weak is
because you don't use those muscles.

My suggestion is to join a cheap gym. If you will use it, it is well worth
    the money.

I prefer curl-ups. I don't see anyone in the gym doing them. It's basically
a sit-up without a weight holding your feet down. You can't go straight up
like a sit-up, you have to "curl-up". I thank my martial arts training for
my core strength. All I hear is "Holy [censored]! Look at that." when I have
someone stack 135# on my lower back/ass when I do bridges. I shake, but I
can hold it for ~60 sec.

Speaking of martial arts, are you going to compete this year? I would go to
the Internationals in Long Beach again, but the wife is due mid-July, and
that's when the tourney is. It was a tough choice, but I decided to not go
there this year. The wife said I would be single again if I went.
    pffft.....She's so selfish. ;-)

If you can do a push-up with your legs bent at 90 degrees and your arms
crossed on your chest, I'd say that's pretty impressive.

Nah. I was never much of a forms guy. Always like fighting. The trouble
is, we fight full contact, and at 49, I'm just not into it anymore. I got
back into forms a bit when I went for my 4th dan...obviously. It's actually
a great workout doing forms for 30 minutes. But I am not traditional like
forms require. I can do them quite well, but it doesn't fit how I like to
move. I'm much more freestyle, and I've adopted many aspects of the other
styles I've studied. I've actually toyed with the idea of making up my own
forms based on my fighting style. Just haven't got around to it yet.

Yes - pick another, different ab exercise. Not everyone's build lends
itself to situps and crunches. I have strong abs but I train them in
other ways. John Hanson's suggestion of front squats is solid -
deadlifts and back squats will also work. Buy yourself a wheel on a
stick for $6 at the local fitness store and do kneeling wheel rollouts -
another great exercise for the midsection. Grab something heavy in one
hand - dumbbell or kettlebell - and stand with it for time or walk with
it, trying to pretend that you're carrying equal weight in both hands
when you aren't - good for the sides of the midsection. There are many
    ways to work the abs.
